Adjective endings after indefinite article
A2 · Elementary · Cases & Verbs
The rule
ein großer Hund, eine große Katze, ein großes Haus.
How it works
After ein, eine and kein, adjectives take the ending that makes the article visible. In the nominative, ein großer Hund (masculine), eine große Katze (feminine), ein großes Haus (neuter). Where the article has no ending (ein, kein in the nominative masculine and neuter), the adjective takes the strong ending -er or -es.
When to use it
Add adjective endings after ein, eine or kein, which often show the gender of the noun clearly.
Use cases
- Introducing a new noun with an adjective: Ich habe einen neuen Job
- Describing a thing you do not own yet: Sie sucht eine günstige Wohnung
- Using kein with adjectives: Das ist kein schlechter Plan
Examples
- Ich habe einen kleinen Bruder – I have a little brother
- Wir haben einen kleinen Garten. – We have a small garden.
- Er trägt keine warme Jacke. – He is not wearing a warm jacket.
- Das ist ein interessantes Buch. – That is an interesting book.
Common mistake
Dropping the ending after ein: "ein großer Hund" is correct, "ein groß Hund" is not.
Memory tip
ein großer Hund, eine große Katze, ein großes Haus: the endings follow the gender.
