Complex nominal style
C1 · Advanced · Mastery
The rule
Replace clauses with noun phrases in formal texts.
How it works
Formal and academic German often replaces clauses with noun phrases, which makes sentences dense and precise. A sentence such as Als die Preise stiegen, kauften die Leute weniger can become Mit dem Anstieg der Preise sank der Konsum. Use this style in essays and reports, but keep the sentence understandable.
When to use it
Use noun phrases instead of clauses in formal texts, a hallmark of academic and official German.
Use cases
- Writing an academic essay: Mit der Zunahme der Bevölkerung steigt der Bedarf
- Writing a business report: Nach der Umstrukturierung der Abteilung sind die Ergebnisse besser
- Writing a formal summary: Im Hinblick auf die Ergebnisse ist eine Änderung nötig
Examples
- Nach Abschluss der Prüfung – After completion of the exam
- Durch die Digitalisierung der Verwaltung sinkt der Aufwand. – Through the digitalisation of administration the effort decreases.
- Unter Berücksichtigung aller Faktoren empfiehlt sich eine Pause. – Taking all factors into account, a break is recommended.
- Trotz der Kritik an der Reform wurde sie beschlossen. – Despite criticism of the reform it was passed.
Common mistake
Overloading sentences with nested nouns until they become hard to read.
Memory tip
Turn a clause into a noun phrase only when the result is still easy to follow.
