Irregular comparisons
A2 · Elementary · Cases & Verbs
The rule
gut → besser → am besten; viel → mehr → am meisten; gern → lieber → am liebsten.
How it works
Some adjectives have irregular comparatives and superlatives. Gut becomes besser and am besten, viel becomes mehr and am meisten, and gern becomes lieber and am liebsten. Hoch becomes höher and am höchsten, with the stem changing in the comparative and superlative. These forms are very common, so learn them as a set.
When to use it
Use the irregular comparatives and superlatives of gut, viel and gern.
Use cases
- Describing quality: Das ist besser als gestern
- Talking about quantity: Ich habe mehr Zeit als du
- Naming a favourite: Am liebsten trinke ich Tee
Examples
- Das ist besser – That is better
- Das Wetter ist heute besser. – The weather is better today.
- Sie verdient am meisten in der Firma. – She earns the most in the company.
- Er hat mehr Bücher als ich. – He has more books than I do.
Common mistake
Regularising them: "gutter" or "guter" is not right; besser and am besten are.
Memory tip
gut → besser → am besten; viel → mehr → am meisten; gern → lieber → am liebsten.
