Reflexive with dative

A2 · Elementary · Cases & Verbs

The rule

sich etwas anziehen, sich die Hände waschen use the dative reflexive.

How it works

When a verb already has an accusative object, the reflexive pronoun moves to the dative: Ich wasche mich (accusative) but Ich wasche mir die Hände (dative reflexive, accusative object die Hände). The dative reflexive forms are mir, dir, sich, uns, euch and sich. Body parts and clothes are common objects in this structure.

When to use it

Use the dative reflexive when the verb already has an accusative object, for example "Ich wasche mir die Hände".

Examples

Common mistake

Using mich instead of mir when there is another object: "Ich wasche mich die Hände" is wrong.

Memory tip

If the verb has an accusative object, the reflexive pronoun is dative: mir, dir, sich, uns, euch, sich.
