Separable verbs in the perfect
A2 · Elementary · Cases & Verbs
The rule
ab-, an-, auf-, aus-, mit-, vor-, zu-… Participle: ange-kauft.
How it works
In the perfect, a separable verb keeps its prefix attached, and ge- goes between the prefix and the stem: anrufen → angerufen, einkaufen → eingekauft, aufstehen → aufgestanden. The auxiliary is haben or sein, depending on the verb. This pattern is one of the most frequently used in everyday speech.
When to use it
Use separable verbs in the perfect, where ge- goes between the prefix and the stem.
Use cases
- Reporting a phone call: Ich habe dich gestern angerufen
- Talking about shopping: Wir haben viel eingekauft
- Describing getting up or going out: Er ist spät aufgestanden
Examples
- Ich habe eingekauft – I did the shopping
- Der Zug ist pünktlich abgefahren. – The train left on time.
- Hast du das Licht ausgemacht? – Did you turn off the light?
- Sie hat das Essen vorbereitet. – She prepared the meal.
Common mistake
Putting ge- in front of the prefix ("geangekauft") or leaving it out ("ankauft"). The correct form is "angekauft".
Memory tip
Prefix + ge + stem + t: an-ge-kauft, auf-ge-standen.
