Superlative
A2 · Elementary · Cases & Verbs
The rule
am + adjective-sten, or der/die/das + -ste.
How it works
The superlative expresses the highest degree of a quality. Predicatively, use am plus the adjective plus -sten: am schönsten. Before a noun, use the definite article with the adjective and the -ste ending: der schönste Tag. Irregular forms such as am besten and am meisten must be learned.
When to use it
Say something is the most, using am + adjective + -sten, or der/die/das + adjective + -ste in attributive use.
Use cases
- Ranking things: Das ist der beste Film des Jahres
- Naming a favourite: Am liebsten fahre ich Rad
- Describing extremes: Das ist die höchste Stelle der Stadt
Examples
- Er läuft am schnellsten – He runs fastest
- Dieser Berg ist am höchsten. – This mountain is the highest.
- Sie ist die jüngste Mitarbeiterin. – She is the youngest employee.
- Welches Restaurant ist am günstigsten? – Which restaurant is the cheapest?
Common mistake
Adding -est or using "most" instead of -sten: "am schönsten" is right, "am schönest" is not.
Memory tip
Predicative: am schönsten. Before a noun: der schönste Tag.
