Concessive structures
C1 · Advanced · Mastery
The rule
so sehr … auch, wie auch immer.
How it works
Concessive structures express "however" or "no matter how" in formal and everyday German: so sehr … auch (however much), wie auch immer (however), egal wie (no matter how). The adjective or verb after so sehr follows the pattern so sehr ich es versuche (however much I try). They express that something does not change the outcome.
When to use it
Express "however" or "no matter" with so sehr … auch, wie auch immer and egal wie.
Use cases
- Expressing persistence: So sehr ich es versuche, ich verstehe es nicht
- Expressing indifference: Wie auch immer du entscheidest, ich unterstütze dich
- Expressing that the result does not change: Egal wie das Wetter ist, wir fahren
Examples
- So sehr er sich auch bemühte – However hard he tried
- So schön das Konzert auch war, das Essen war schlecht. – However nice the concert was, the food was bad.
- Wie auch immer die Prüfung ausgeht, ich bin stolz. – However the exam turns out, I am proud.
- Egal wie spät es ist, ich bleibe bei dir. – No matter how late it is, I will stay with you.
Common mistake
Using wie auch immer with a verb in the middle of a sentence; it needs the right word order.
Memory tip
So sehr … auch: "So sehr ich es versuche, ich verstehe es nicht."
