Genitive with abstract nouns
B2 · Upper-Intermediate · Style & Precision
The rule
Often in formal writing.
How it works
In formal writing, the genitive is used to connect abstract nouns: die Ursache des Problems (the cause of the problem), die Bedeutung der Entscheidung (the meaning of the decision). The genitive is a clear way to show relationships between ideas, and it is common in academic and journalistic texts.
When to use it
Use the genitive in formal writing to connect abstract nouns: die Ursache des Problems (the cause of the problem).
Use cases
- Describing causes and effects: Die Folgen des Klimawandels sind gravierend
- Describing the aim of a project: Das Ziel dieser Studie ist klar
- Describing a result: Die Ergebnisse der Umfrage überraschen
Examples
- die Lösung des Problems – the solution of the problem
- Die Stärke der Argumente überzeugt. – The strength of the arguments is convincing.
- Der Verlauf der Debatte war schwierig. – The course of the debate was difficult.
- Die Rolle der Medien ist wichtig. – The role of the media is important.
Common mistake
Replacing the genitive with von in every case; in formal German the genitive is preferred.
Memory tip
Noun + des/der + noun for formal writing: der Verlauf der Geschichte.
