Passive voice (past)

B1 · Intermediate · Advanced Structures

The rule

wurde + past participle.

How it works

The past passive uses the simple past of werden (wurde, wurden) with the past participle: Das Gebäude wurde 1900 gebaut. It is mainly used in written German, such as news reports and historical accounts. In speech, the perfect passive (ist … worden) is used, as in Das Fenster ist repariert worden.

When to use it

Describe a past event in the passive with wurde plus the past participle, which is common in news and formal writing.

Use cases

Examples

Common mistake

Using sein instead of werden in the passive: "Das Haus wurde gebaut" is right.

Memory tip

Passive past: wurde + participle. Common in news reports.
