Rhetorical devices

C1 · Advanced · Mastery

The rule

Use contrasts, rhetorical questions and parallelism.

How it works

Rhetorical devices such as contrasts, rhetorical questions, parallelism and repetition make German argument and speech persuasive. A contrast (nicht nur … sondern auch) structures an argument, a rhetorical question invites the reader to agree, and parallel sentences give rhythm. Use them sparingly in essays and speeches.

When to use it

Use contrasts, rhetorical questions and parallelism to make writing persuasive.

Use cases

Examples

Common mistake

Overusing rhetorical questions, which can sound unnatural in formal German.

Memory tip

Vary sentence openings and use a contrast (zwar … aber) to structure arguments.
