Double connectors

B1 · Intermediate · Advanced Structures

The rule

entweder … oder, sowohl … als auch, weder … noch, nicht nur … sondern auch.

How it works

Paired connectors join two elements with a precise relationship: entweder … oder (either … or), sowohl … als auch (both … and), weder … noch (neither … nor) and nicht nur … sondern auch (not only … but also). Each pair has a fixed structure, and both parts must appear. The verb position stays the same as in the sentence without the pair.

When to use it

Use paired connectors: entweder … oder (either … or), sowohl … als auch (both … and), weder … noch (neither … nor) and nicht nur … sondern auch.

Use cases

Examples

Common mistake

Using only one half of the pair, for example "sowohl Katze" without "als auch".

Memory tip

Learn each pair as one unit with the two words at different positions.
