Konjunktion bis
B1 · Intermediate · Advanced Structures
The rule
bis = until.
How it works
Bis (until) introduces a clause that shows the endpoint of an action or state. The verb goes to the end: Ich warte, bis der Zug kommt. Bis can also be a preposition with a time or place: bis Freitag, bis Berlin. Combining bis with nicht can express a continued state, as in Ich bleibe, bis er nicht mehr da ist.
When to use it
Use bis (until) to say how long an action lasts, with the verb at the end.
Use cases
- Describing a waiting period: Wir warten, bis die Tür aufgeht
- Setting a deadline: Ich arbeite, bis alles fertig ist
- Describing how long something lasts: Das Geschäft ist offen, bis der Laden schließt
Examples
- Warte, bis ich komme – Wait until I come
- Bitte bleib hier, bis ich zurückkomme. – Please stay here until I come back.
- Wir schlafen, bis die Sonne aufgeht. – We sleep until the sun rises.
- Er lernt so lange, bis er alles versteht. – He studies for as long as it takes until he understands everything.
Common mistake
Putting the verb in second position after bis, as in a main clause. The verb goes to the end: "bis er kommt".
Memory tip
Bis = until: "Ich warte, bis er kommt."
