Past perfect (Plusquamperfekt)

B1 · Intermediate · Advanced Structures

The rule

hatte/war + past participle.

How it works

The past perfect (Plusquamperfekt) describes an action that happened before another past action. It is formed with hatte or war plus the past participle: Ich hatte gegessen, bevor er ankam. Use the past perfect in narratives to show the sequence of events clearly, and remember that the auxiliary is the simple past of haben or sein.

When to use it

Describe an event that happened before another past event with the past perfect: hatte or war plus the participle.

Use cases

Examples

Common mistake

Using the perfect for both events in a sequence, which blurs the order.

Memory tip

Plusquamperfekt = earlier past. Form: hatte/war + participle.
