Polite requests
B1 · Intermediate · Advanced Structures
The rule
Könnten Sie…? Würden Sie…?
How it works
The Konjunktiv II makes requests sound polite. Könnten Sie (Could you), würden Sie (Would you) and hätten Sie (Would you have) are standard in shops, offices and formal emails. They are softer than the imperative and are essential for customer service and professional German.
When to use it
Make requests sound polite with könnten Sie, würden Sie or hätten Sie.
Use cases
- Asking a shop assistant for help: Könnten Sie mir die Größe zeigen?
- Making a request in an email: Würden Sie mir bitte antworten?
- Asking for information politely: Hätten Sie einen Moment Zeit?
Examples
- Könnten Sie mir helfen? – Could you help me?
- Könnten Sie das bitte wiederholen? – Could you please repeat that?
- Würdest du mir kurz helfen? – Would you help me briefly? (informal)
- Hätten Sie vielleicht einen Stift für mich? – Would you perhaps have a pen for me?
Common mistake
Using the direct imperative in polite settings: "Könnten Sie mir helfen?" is softer than "Helfen Sie mir!"
Memory tip
Könnten Sie …? Würden Sie …? are the standard polite forms in shops and offices.
