Präpositionen with temporal use
B1 · Intermediate · Advanced Structures
The rule
ab, bis, seit, vor, nach, gegen, innerhalb.
How it works
Several prepositions express time: ab (from, starting at), bis (until), seit (since), vor (ago), nach (after), gegen (around, approximately) and innerhalb (within). Ab expresses a starting point in the future or from now, seit expresses a starting point in the past that continues to now, and vor refers to a time in the past from now.
When to use it
Express time with ab, bis, seit, vor, nach, gegen and innerhalb, which indicate starting point, end or duration.
Use cases
- Describing a starting date: Ab Montag ist das Büro geschlossen
- Describing how long something has lasted: Ich wohne seit zwei Jahren hier
- Estimating a time: Wir kommen gegen acht Uhr
Examples
- Seit 2020 wohne ich hier – I have lived here since 2020
- Der Kurs beginnt innerhalb einer Woche. – The course starts within a week.
- Vor drei Tagen habe ich dich gesehen. – I saw you three days ago.
- Nach dem Essen gehen wir spazieren. – After the meal we go for a walk.
Common mistake
Confusing seit (since, from a past point) with vor (ago).
Memory tip
Seit = since a point in the past. Vor = ago. Ab = from now on or from a date.
