Wissen vs. kennen

B1 · Intermediate · Advanced Structures

The rule

wissen = facts; kennen = to be acquainted with.

How it works

Wissen means "to know" a fact, a piece of information or how to do something (Ich weiß die Antwort; Ich weiß, wie man schwimmt). Kennen means "to be acquainted with" a person, place, book or thing (Ich kenne Berlin; Ich kenne diesen Song). Using kennen for facts is a common error.

When to use it

Use wissen for facts and knowing how to do something, and kennen for being familiar with people, places or things.

Use cases

Examples

Common mistake

Using kennen for facts: "Ich weiß das" (I know that), not "Ich kenne das".

Memory tip

Wissen = facts, kennen = familiarity: Ich weiß die Antwort. Ich kenne Berlin.
